FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Hydrocephalus is known as the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cerebral cavities, these cavities are known as "ventricles".

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), is a fluid of transparent color that has as main function to surround to the brain and to the spinal cord protecting them in case of injuries; contains the nutrients and proteins needed for normal brain feeding and functioning. It accumulates in a volume between 100mL and 150mL under normal conditions.

The condition of Hydrocephalus can be presented in two ways:

  • Congenital: Due to genetic factors or developmental problems in the fetus during pregnancy.
  • Acquired: At any age, due to injuries, brain trauma, infections, strokes and tumors among others.
  • Head with an unusual size (greater).
  • Nausea
  • Threw up
  • Constant headache
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion
  • Problems to maintain balance
  • Problems with memory
  • Drowsiness
  • In case of having these or more symptoms, it is important and necessary to consult a health specialist to define whether or not the condition exists, as well as its possible treatment.

When the detection of the disease is timely and appropriate treatment is provided, the patient's quality of life may be normal. There can sometimes be limitations that can be treated by therapy and / or medication. The implantation of a CSF shunt valve that helps to eliminate the excess of it in the head is the most common treatment for the patients with Hydrocephalus.

Normally a CSF shunt valve should remain implanted in the patient indefinitely. It is common for changes in the components of the valve or in its entirety due to variations in the patient's own or the patient's own growth.

The CSF Shunt valves made by Biomed have various configurations mainly in terms of placement (implantation) and how to control the pressure. They are manufactured in 3 different sizes:

  • Neonatal
  • Pediatric
  • Adult
  • The decision on the use of each model of valve depends directly on the doctor who is treating the condition, however it is important to mention that all models of valves have the same quality and have the same purpose of use.

The pressure of operation of each of the valves manufactured by Biomed is different (very high, high, medium, low and very low), the selection of it will depend directly on the status of the patient and should be a unique and exclusive decision of the doctor which is treating the condition. Having the information of the pressure that the patient requires is fundamental at the moment of acquiring a CSF shunt valve.

The quality and purpose of each CSF shunt valve is exactly the same regardless of the cost at which they are offered to the public.

It is the accumulation of blood between the brain (the dura) and its outermost covering (the arachnoid). It is generated due to rupture of blood vessels resulting from severe cranial trauma, causing an increase in intracranial pressure which can lead to damage to brain tissue and even death.

In order to eliminate a subdural hematoma, a surgery is necessary, in which a catheter is inserted through a small trephine (hole in the skull) to drain the accumulated blood, thus bringing the pressure to normal parameters. Biomed´s Subdural Universal Drainage Bag is suitable for this procedure.
